As a freshman admitted to Cal, you might wonder, am I not staying in the same dorm room for 4 years like any other colleges? The answer is nope! Because the university’s official residence halls are only guaranteed for freshmen, and you’ll need to find places to live after that. 🏠On-campus housing is allocated through a lottery system where you will fill out a priority list and are randomly selected for housing assignments. Housing is primarily divided into two areas, the south side and the north side. Both of them are close to the campus and dining halls. 💛South Side Living on the south side of the campus is ideal for students studying CS, as most entry-level course lectures are located in Wheeler Hall, which is in the southern campus. There are a lot of street snacks 🍰🍫 and restaurants🍜🥘🌮, and it is closer to downtown. Two blocks away from the south side, there are Haas Pavilion, RSF (gym), MLK building, and Sproul Plaza, where many university events take place, so it’s really convenient to participate in those. However, the south side is also close to People's Park, a notorious gathering place for the homeless, so it is important to be cautious when going out at night. 💛North Side On the other hand, Foothill and Stern, located on the northeast side of the campus, is a few steps from the CS (Soda) Hall and Engineering (Cory) Hall. Since they are located on a hill, they are very quiet and peaceful, making it ideal for studying. There is no homeless or weed like the south side, however, you'll have to climb up the hill to get home, hence the name (unless you don’t leave your dorm at all XD). -------- 📍Southside includes Unit 1-3 and blackwell hall; North includes foothill and stern. You can see where they are on the map: A - Unit 1 B - Unit 2 C - Unit 3 D - Blackwell Hall E - Foothill F - Stern The star ⭐️on the right with arrows is Wheeler Hall, where most entry-level CS lectures happen (It’s actually an auditorium, and that’s how we fit thousands of students). The star ⭐️on the left is Dwinelle Hall, where a lot of other Letters & Science courses happen. 📝Note that although the distance from the stars to A-D and E-F look the same, the time and effort you take are different, because there is a very steep hill outside foothill and stern. It takes significantly longer to climb up and down and it’s almost impossible to bike up. ⛰️⛰️⛰️ I'll talk about the homeless map I marked and more in following posts.
